U.S. Stocks Erase Gains on Portfolio Rebalance; Treasuries Rise

Bloomberg (27/11) -- U.S. stocks erased gains as investors sold equities in the final 30 minutes of trading to rebalance portfolios, trimming an earlier rally after improving housing data lifted builders. Treasuries advanced while European stocks fell for the first time in three days.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose less than 0.1 percent to 1,802.75 at 4 p.m. in New York, after gaining as much as 0.3 percent. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed above 4,000 for the first time since 2000. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index declined 0.6 percent. The yield on Treasury five-year notes slid three basis points to 1.31 percent as the government’s auction of $35 billion in five-year notes attracted stronger-than-forecast demand. Europe’s 17-nation shared currency gained 0.4 percent to $1.3569 and the yen appreciated 0.4 percent to 101.34 per dollar. Oil dropped 0.4 percent to $93.68 a barrel. Home prices in 20 U.S. cities rose by the most since February 2006 in the 12 months through September, indicating the housing market sustained progress even as borrowing costs climbed. Confidence among U.S. consumers unexpectedly declined in November to a seven-month low. More than $8 trillion has been added to the value of global equities this year, the biggest increase since 2009, as central banks took steps to shore up economies worldwide. Stocks pared their gains in the final 30 minutes of trading as investors sold U.S. equities to mimic changes in MSCI indexes that are scheduled to take effect at the end the close today. Apple Inc., Oracle Corp. and Exxon Mobil Corp. are among companies that face the biggest decrease in weighting in the MSCI rebalancing, according to Societe Generale SA. Lennar Corp. and PulteGroup Inc. climbed at least 4.4 percent, leading a rally among homebuilders. Technology shares rose 0.4 percent as a group in the S&P 500. Apple climbed 1.8 percent. China Mobile Ltd.’s selling of iPhone will provide a tailwind to Apple’s 2014 earnings estimates, according to Peter Misek, an analyst with Jefferies LLC.

NEW YORK/LONDON, Reuters (26/11) – Emas turun dekati 1% pada hari Selasa ini, mengalami penurunan dari satu pekan tertingginya di awal sesi pembukaan, sejalan dengan kenaikan pada aktivitas perumahan di AS yang memicu kekhawatiran bahwa Federal Reserve akan memutuskan untuk mengurangi program stimulus pembelian obligasinya.

Emas Bullion berada dibawah tekanan pasca data menunjukkan perizinan pembangunan perumahan AS mendekati 5-1/2 tahun tertingginya pada bulan Oktober lalu dan sebuah laporan menunjukkan bahwa indeks gabungan S&P/Case Shiller dari harga rumah di 20 wilayah metropolitan naik sebesar 13.3% di bulan September lalu. Laporan-laporan tersebut merupakan tanda-tanda menguatnya perekonomian, meskipun adanya kenaikan suku bunga hipotek dan shutdown pemerintah AS pada bulan lalu. Gold gives up gains to drop nearly 1 pct on U.S. housing data

NEW YORK/LONDON, Reuters (27/11) - Gold fell nearly 1 percent on Tuesday, retreating from a one-week high set earlier in the session, as encouraging U.S. housing activity stirred fears the Federal Reserve will soon decide to reduce its bond-buying stimulus program. Bullion came under pressure after data showed permits for future U.S. home construction hit a near 5-1/2 year high in October, and a report showed the S&P/Case Shiller composite index of home prices in 20 metropolitan areas jumped 13.3 percent in September. The reports were the latest signs of strength in the economy, despite headwinds from rising mortgage rates and last month's partial government shutdown. Spot gold was down 0.9 percent at $1,241.24 an ounce by 3:05 p.m. EST (2005 GMT), having earlier hit $1,256.49 in early trading, its highest since Nov. 20. U.S. gold futures outperformed spot bullion, and they settled up 20 cents at $1,241.40 an ounce. Trading volume was at 282,600 lots, preliminary Reuters data showed, nearly double its 30-day average of 156,000 lots and largely boosted by the December-February contract rollover ahead of the December contract's first-notice day on Friday. Some investors reduced their bullish bets after a rally driven by buying related to Comex December option expiry on Monday, said Frank McGhee, head precious metals dealer at Chicago commodities brokerage Alliance Financial LLC. A higher S&P 500 equities index on the bright housing data also weakened gold's safe-haven appeal, traders said.

 

Saham AS Berfluktuasi Ditengah Kesepekatan Iran

Bloomberg (26/11) – Saham-saham AS berfluktuasi, dengan indeks Standard & Poor 500 menghapus gain di awal pembukaan pasca menyentuh level tertingginya selama transaksi, sejalan  dengan Iran menyepakati untuk membaatsi program nuklirnya.

Alcoa Inc. naik sebesar 4.3% dan Caterpillar Inc. naik 2.2% pasca para analis merekomendasikan untuk membeli saham. Indeks acuan pada airline hampir menyentuh level tujuh tahun tertingginya sejalan dengan tergelincirnya minyak mentah. Schlumberger Ltd. dan Noble Corp. turun lebih dari 2.7%, berada pada alur penurunan diantara saham-saham energi lainnya. Indeks S&P 500 tergelincir 0.1% ke level 1,8036.11 pada pukul 3:10 sore di New York pasca awal pembukaan naik sebesar 0.2%. Dow Jones Industrial Average naik sejumlah 14.58 point, atau 0.1%, ke level 16,079.35. Indeks Nasdaq Composite naik 0.2% ke level 3,999.08 pasca awal pembukaan melebihi level 4,000 pertama kalinya sejak September 2000.
