The
yen approached the strongest in four months against the euro as
increasing violence in Iraq boosted speculation crude oil supplies will
be disrupted and bolstered the appeal of haven assets.
Japan��s currency rose versus all of its 16 major peers after Iraq��s military attacked Sunni Muslim insurgents who had captured territory north of Baghdad, trying to turn back battlefield advances that threaten to split apart the country. The euro dropped versus the yen and the pound before a report that economists say will confirm the region��s inflation slowed in May, boosting the case for additional monetary stimulus that tends to debase a currency.
The yen rose 0.2 percent to 137.87 per euro at 11:01 a.m. in Tokyo after appreciating to 137.73 on June 12, the strongest level since Feb. 6. Japan��s currency gained 0.2 percent to 101.85 per dollar. The euro was little changed at $1.3537 after declining 0.8 percent last week.
West Texas Intermediate for July delivery climbed as much as 63 cents to $107.54 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange and was at $107.32. The contract rose 0.4 percent to $106.91 on June 13, the highest closing level since Sept. 18.
