The S&P 500 fell less than 1 point to 1,841.09 at 4 p.m. in New York. The benchmark index is poised for a 29 percent gain this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 25.94 points, or 0.2 percent, to 16,504.35 today. The S&P 500 has gained 2 percent in December, heading for its fourth straight monthly advance. The gauge climbed 3.7 percent from Dec. 13 through Dec. 27, its biggest two-week rally since July, as the Federal Reserve announced plans to reduce the pace of bond buying amid faster-than-estimated economic growth. Three rounds of stimulus, known as quantitative easing, have sent the S&P 500 up 172 percent from a 12-year low in 2009.

Gold Declines on Way to Worst Year Since 1981 as Silver Drops

Bloomberg (30/12) -- Gold fell for the first time in five days, heading for its biggest annual loss in three decades as investor holdings extended their decline to the lowest since 2009. Silver retreated for the first time in more than a week.

Bullion for immediate delivery slid as much as 0.5 percent to $1,206.81 an ounce and was at $1,207.69 by 2:23 p.m. in Singapore. Prices climbed to $1,219.28 on Dec. 27, the highest since Dec. 19, as the dollar weakened against the euro. Silver dropped as much as 1.6 percent, the first loss since Dec. 19. Gold tumbled 28 percent this year, set for the worst annual plunge since 1981. Some investors lost faith in the metal as a store of value amid a rally in U.S. equities and an improving economy, which prompted the Federal Reserve to pare its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases. Holdings in exchange-traded funds backed by bullion dropped 33 percent this year to the least since 2009, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Assets in the SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest bullion-backed ETP, fell to 801.22 metric tons on Dec. 27, the lowest level since January 2009, and plunged 41 percent this year, data on the fund’s website shows. Gold for February delivery slipped 0.6 percent to $1,206.50 an ounce on the Comex in New York. Silver for immediate delivery lost 1.5 percent to $19.7802 an ounce, tumbling 35 percent this year for the biggest slump since 1981. Platinum fell 0.1 percent to $1,373.40 an ounce, down 11 percent this year. Palladium slid 0.2 percent to $710.18 an ounce and is poised to gain 1 percent in 2013.

The dollar rose to ¥104.69 from ¥104.27 late Tuesday, ahead of the Christmas holiday .A push above ¥105 would be the first time the currency has traded above that level since Oct. 3, 2008, according to FactSet data. Japanese stocks extended their six-year high on Thursday as the Nikkei Stock Average closed above 16,000. The Federal Reserve said last week it would slow the rate of its bond purchases in January to $75 billion a month. The decision marks the beginning of the end for its unprecedented monetary stimulus, which has been understood to weigh on the dollar. At the same time, many investors expect the Bank of Japan to ramp up its monetary stimulus in 2014. The ICE dollar index, a measure of the U.S. unit against six other currencies, was quoted at 80.489 versus 80.507 late Tuesday. The WSJ Dollar Index was at 73.91 versus from 73.82 late Tuesday. The euro was little changed from its pre-holiday levels, buying $1.3690, compared to $1.3677 late Tuesday. European markets were closed Thursday.

China’s Stocks Advance as Technology Shares Gain

Bloomberg (24/12) -- China’s stocks rose for a second day, led by technology shares and Guangdong province-based companies. Drugmakers and banks declined.

The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.2 percent to 2,092.91 at the close. The gauge has lost 5.8 percent this month, poised for the biggest decline since June. While the central bank’s first reverse-repurchase operations in three weeks sent money-market rates lower today, investors are concerned this trend won’t last, said West China Securities Co. The People’s Bank of China auctioned 29 billion yuan ($4.8 billion) of seven-day reverse repos, according to two traders. The seven-day repurchase rate, a gauge of funding availability in the banking system, tumbled 278 basis points to 6.45 percent as of 3:19 p.m. Soaring money-market rates in China sparked a stock sell-off this month that’s wiped $156 billion of market value from local equities, which are poised for the biggest monthly loss since a record cash crunch earlier this year.

Dolar Higher In Asia

AFP (25/12) -- The dollar traded higher against major currencies in Asia on Wednesday following another batch of solid US economic data. The greenback bought 104.37 yen in Tokyo afternoon trade from 104.27 yen in New York Tuesday afternoon. The euro bought $1.3667 against $1.3681 while fetching 142.62 yen from 142.65 yen. The November report on US durable goods orders showed a better-than-expected increase of 3.5 percent. That was followed by a report on new home sales in the US that also beat expectations. Tuesday's data came on the heels of other recent upbeat US economic reports, which have added fire to sentiment about the world's biggest economy after the Federal Reserve last week moved to scale back its vast stimulus programme. The dollar was likely to be susceptible to moves from Japanese corporate accounts on the Christmas day in Asia when there would be fewer major players in the market, a senior dealer at a major Japanese trust bank told Dow Jones Newswires.

 

Index S&P 500, Dow Naik Menuju Rekor Penutupan Tertinggi

S&P 500, Dow rise to record closing highs

NEW YORK (25/12) MarketWatch — U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 rising to record closes after an upbeat report on durable goods orders.

In a holiday-shortened session, the Dow recorded its 49th record close this year after rising for five consecutive days. The blue-chip average rose 62.94 points, or 0.4%, to 16,357.55. The S&P 500 also reached a record level after three consecutive days of gains. The benchmark index closed 5.33 points higher, or 0.3%, to 1,833.32. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite closed up 6.51 points, or 0.2%, at 4,155.42, its highest level since September 2000. The market closed early at 1 p.m. Eastern and will be closed on Wednesday for Christmas. On Monday, both the Dow and the S&P 500 closed at record highs after upbeat consumer-spending data added to the perception that the U.S. economic recovery is poised to accelerate in 2014. Investors welcomed Tuesday’s durable-goods report showing that orders for big-ticket U.S. items, such as aircraft and transportation equipment, rose 3.5% last month. Bloomberg (24/12) -- U.S. stocks rose, with benchmark indexes extending all-time highs, as Apple Inc. rallied and the International Monetary Fund indicated it would raise its outlook for the economy.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 0.5 percent to 1,828.09 at 4 p.m. in New York. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 74.69 points, or 0.5 percent, to 16,295.83. The Dow jumped 3 percent last week and the S&P 500 climbed 2.4 percent as the Federal Reserve said it will reduce the pace of bond buying amid faster-than-estimated economic growth. The S&P 500 has advanced 28 percent in 2013, putting it on course for its biggest annual rally since 1997. Three rounds of monetary stimulus have sent the equities benchmark up more than 168 percent from a 12-year low in 2009. The IMF is raising its outlook for the U.S. economy, as a budget deal in Washington and the Fed’s plan to taper its bond buying ease doubts about the future, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said yesterday in an interview broadcast today on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The IMF predicted in October that the world’s largest economy would expand 2.6 percent next year. Bloomberg (24/12) -- Gold futures fell as U.S. equities rose to a record amid signs of an improving U.S. economy, reducing demand for the metal as an alternative investment.

The International Monetary Fund plans to raise its outlook for the U.S. economy. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index of stocks climbed as much as 0.6 percent. On Dec. 19, gold closed at the lowest in more than three years after the Federal Reserve said it will slow stimulus amid improving job-market prospects. Gold futures for February delivery fell 0.6 percent to settle at $1,197 an ounce at 1:37 p.m. on the Comex in New York. On Dec. 19, the metal closed at $1,193.60, the lowest for a most-active contract since Aug. 3, 2010. Gold has tumbled 29 percent this year, heading for the first annual annual drop since 2000 and the biggest slump since 1981. The Fed said on Dec. 18 it will cut monthly asset purchases to $75 billion from $85 billion, while pledging to keep interest rates near zero percent. Money managers increased their short gold positions by 1.2 percent to 75,199 Comex contracts in the week ended Dec. 17, within 6 percent of the record in July, government data showed on Dec. 20. The U.S. currency last week advanced versus eight Group of 10 currencies as the Fed said it will reduce the size of its bond-purchase program and reiterated that benchmark rates will remain low contingent on jobless and inflation data. Australia’s dollar added to its biggest advance in more than a month and traded about a cent from its three-year low. The greenback was at 104.06 yen as of 10:42 a.m. in Tokyo from 104.10 on Dec. 20, when it reached 104.64, the highest since October 2008. It fell 0.1 percent to $1.3682 per euro. Japan’s currency fell to 142.37 per euro from 142.32. The Bloomberg U.S. Dollar Index, which tracks the U.S. currency against 10 major counterparts, was little changed at 1,021.23 after rising 0.5 percent last week. Gold steady above $1,200, but tapering worries remain

SINGAPORE, Reuters (23/12) - Gold ticked up Monday after its biggest weekly loss in a month, but the metal was still at the risk of falling back below $1,200 an ounce as investors fretted over the impact of a U.S. stimulus tapering.

Spot gold edged up 0.1 percent to $1,203.91 an ounce by 0018 GMT. It rose 1 percent on Friday on short covering after losing 4 percent in the previous three sessions. Gold fell 3 percent last week after the Fed said the U.S. economy was strong enough to scale back its massive bond-buying stimulus, winding down an era of easy money that saw gold rally to an all-time high of $1,920.30 an ounce in 2011. Gold has fallen nearly 30 percent this year as a scale back of stimulus hurts its inflation-hedge appeal. Hedge fund managers cut their bullish bets on gold only modestly this week before the first-ever tapering of the U.S. monetary stimulus sent the precious metal's price to six-month lows, data released on Friday showed. SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings rose 5.40 tonnes to 814.12 tonnes on Friday. The volume of gold transferred between accounts held by bullion clearers rose by 22 percent to an average of 24.2 million ounces a day, the London Bullion Market Association said.

The Dow’s weekly advance of 3.1 percent was its biggest since Jan. 4. Data today showed the rate of expansion in the third quarter was faster than previously estimated as consumers stepped up spending on services such as health care and companies invested more in software. Gross domestic product climbed at a 4.1 percent annualized rate, the strongest since the final three months of 2011 and up from a previous estimate of 3.6 percent, Commerce Department figures showed. The S&P 500 has rallied 28 percent so far in 2013, on course for its best performance since 1997. The Fed will probably reduce its bond purchases by $10 billion in each of its next seven meetings before ending the program in December 2014, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of 41 economists conducted on Dec. 19. SAN FRANCISCO (20/12) - MarketWatch -- A rangebound stock session ended with records for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and slight losses for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Thursday.

The Dow ended up 11.11 points, or 0.1%, to 16,179.08. That was a closing record, its 46th of the year. It also hit an intraday high of 16,194.72. NEW YORK (19/12) - Reuters - Gold fell about 1 percent in choppy trade on Wednesday, after the U.S. Federal Reserve lowered its inflation forecast and signalled better prospects for the economy as it announced plans to trim its bond-buying stimulus.

In what amounts to the beginning of the end of its unprecedented support for the U.S. economy, the central bank said it would reduce its monthly asset purchases by $10 billion, bringing them down to $75 billion. Bullion initially rose after the U.S. central bank said it 'likely will be appropriate' to keep overnight rates near zero 'well past the time' that the jobless rate falls below 6.5 percent, especially if inflation expectations remain below target. The metal tumbled in late sessions as the dollar extended its rally and the S&P 500 equities index rose nearly 2 percent to close at a record high. Spot gold was down 0.8 percent at $1,219.21 an ounce by 4:15 p.m. EST (2115 GMT). Its session low was $1,215.70, only $4 above a five-month low of $1,211.44 set on Dec. 4. Bullion for immediate delivery was at $1,242.22 an ounce at 8:35 a.m. in Singapore from $1,241.30 yesterday, when prices climbed for a second day. Gold for February delivery declined 0.3 percent to $1,241 on the Comex, snapping a two-day rally. Gold tumbled 26 percent this year, heading for the first annual loss since 2000, amid speculation the Fed will curb its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases. Officials said at their Oct. 29-30 meeting that they may reduce the purchases “in coming months” as the economy improves. Gains in manufacturing, technology and housing fueled “modest to moderate” economic growth from early October through mid-November, the central bank said in its Beige Book survey released Dec. 4. The Fed may begin reducing the asset purchases at this week’s meeting, according to 34 percent of economists in a Dec. 6 Bloomberg survey, up from 17 percent in a Nov. 8 poll. Gold rose 70 percent from December 2008 to June 2011 as the Fed pumped more than $2 trillion into the financial system. Silver for immediate delivery was little changed at $20.0172 an ounce after climbing to $20.302 yesterday, the highest since Dec. 12. Platinum rose 0.2 percent to $1,364.60 an ounce, while palladium advanced 0.2 percent to $717.16 an ounce, snapping four days of losses.

Both the euro zone and the U.S. report on inflation today as economists see an increased chance Fed policy makers will announce a cut to the bond purchases that have fueled global asset gains after their two-day meeting. China’s Treasury holdings neared a record in October as the U.S. maintained the $85 billion monthly bond-buying program. “Views on whether the Fed will start scaling back asset purchases are mixed,” Mark Smith, a senior economist in Wellington at ANZ Bank New Zealand Ltd., wrote in a client note. “The strength of recent data suggests this can’t be ruled out, setting the scene for volatility.”
